Welcome to the May Events Newsletter.

It's a few days early this month due to a special request from Nathalie who is leaving Belgium to visit Melbourne tomorrow!

All events are free with no booking required. Obviously outdoor events are subject to weather conditions permitting.

Wednesday 1st - Southgate Silent Cinema - sit back in your deckchair, put in your headphones and watch some great films. Today it's The Intouchables. Start time 7pm. Location by riverside opposite Flinders Street railway station.


Thursday 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th – Organ Recital at St Michaels Church at 120 Collins Street. 1pm-1.30pm


Fridays 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st – Qigong (a sort of Tai Chi combining integrated movement, mental cultivation and regulated breathing) – Main Square at Federation Square 8am – 9am


Fridays 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st - Williamstown Heritage Walking Tours. Step back in time and unlock the secrets of Williamstown. Meet 11.45 at the Hobsons Bay Visitor Information Centre, Commonwealth Reserve, Nelson Place, Williamstown. For further information, call 9932 4310.


Friday 3rd - First Friday Dance Club - Join in Polynesian dancing at Queensbridge Square by the river in Southbank from 6pm-8pm.


Saturday/Sundays 4th/5th, 11th/12th. 18th/19th, and 25th/26th - The three Sea Shepherd boats are still in Seaworks dock in Nelson Place in Williamstown (entry via Ann Street) where you can meet the captains, crew and tour their boats 12 noon-4.30pm on weekends only. If you haven't been yet, make sure you don't miss it this month. The Steve Irwin can be seen on both days, the Bob Barker on Saturdays only and Sam Simon can be seen Sundays only. Sundays 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th – Scarecrow Making at the Pop Up Patch which is a vegetable garden on the Federation Square car park rooftop. Bring along old clothes but otherwise all materials provided for the kids to make their own scarecrows. 11am-12pm


Sunday 5th and 19th – Laughter Club at Federation Square by Swanston Street 11am – 11.30am


Sunday 5th, Mon 6th, Wed 8th, Thur 9th, Mon 13th and Tues 21st - Free Indian films as part of The Indian Film Festival on Federation Square Big Screen at 7pm each day. www.iffm.com.au


Sundays 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th - Gypsy Jazz on the Village Green at CERES. Starts 1pm. Join in, or like most people, just watch! www.ceres.org.au


Monday 6th - Classics at Fed Square. Music with the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School at The Edge in Federation Square 12noon -1pm.

Drawing from ancient Chinese traditions this combines gentle exercise and dance – The Atrium in Federation Square 11am – 11.45am


Saturday 11th - Book Clubs at Beer Deluxe-Espresso Cafe in The Atrium Federation Square. At 10am there's the Cult Book Club, 11am is the General Book Club and 12noon is the Contemporary Book Club.


Monday 13th - Learn Crochet at The Square in Federation Square 12-2pm


Tuesday 14th - Southgate Silent Cinema - sit back in your deckchair, put in your headphones and watch some great films. Today it's Skyfall. Start time 7pm. Location by riverside opposite Flinders Street railway station.


Wednesday 15th - Organ-ic Lunch - Bach, Vierne and more by the organist of Switzerlands Cathedral of Lausanne. Melbourne Town Hall 1pm-2pm

Saturday 18th – Poetry – 2 feature poets and the opportunity to read out your own at The Atrium in Federation Square 2pm – 4pm


Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th - Buddha's Day Festival at Federation Square. Includes Buddhist ceremonies and celebrations including the "Bathing of the Buddha", daily Dharma ceremonies, the Wishing Bell and traditional incense offerings, cultural demonstrations, music, art and craft and community service groups. Plenty for Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike!

Saturday 25th - Kirat Festival - Experience the rich tradition and culture of Kirat people from Nepal with traditional dance that has been practice in foothills of Himalaya since the ancient times. Join the dancers and learn Sakela & Chyabrung Dance. The Sakela celebration is a prayer to Mother Nature for healthy crops and protection from natural calamities. River Terrace, Federation Square
