Queen Victoria Market

Go and watch the hustle and bustle at the Queen Victoria Market Melbourne........

........It's a Melbourne institution - now over 125 years old - that's almost as old as Melbourne!

It's a multi-cultural market with an enormous choice of food........

.........It's a great people watching location too. All sorts come here, regulars, tourists and day trippers.

It's a big market - very big!..........

.........If you watched Masterchef recently you'll have seen some of the contestants getting in a pickle when they couldn't find their way around as the market's so big.

Be careful with the opening times though.........

.........they vary widely. I turned up about 4 times before I found it open.

I haven't been round every stall but it certainly seems to have everything you'd need here.......

.....it also seems to have a lot of things you wouldn't need!

About half of the market is food related apparently. The other items vary considerably, from little live baby ducklings (maybe this is food related!) to having your name written in Japanese!

You'll find free live music here on the first Sunday of every month in the summer.

The address is 513 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne - a short walk from the free tram service .

Opening times are Tues and Thurs 6am-2pm, Fri 6am-5pm, sat 6am-3pm, Sun 9am-4pm, closed Mon and Wed and quite a few public holidays.

Free parking is available Mon-Fri if you arrive and leave before 10am. Fridays you can also park free between 4pm and 7pm.

Check out the map below to find it.

My favourite time here is on Wednesday nights in the summer when the market trades as the Suzuki Night Market opening between 5.30pm-10pm.......

.......It completely transforms from a big market to a cool place to hang out......

.......There's interesting original stalls, great food and free live entertainment and music. Check out Queen Victoria Night Market for more details.
